Introducing the SAT Intensive Program for KIS Jeju

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for your interest in our extracurricular curriculum.

Preparing for college is no easy task, especially in Korea where students (and parents) expend many hours and much expense on test preparation, school performance, and other activities in hopes of attending elite universities. Many of you, I’m sure, already know that preparing for college begins in a student’s freshman year of high school.

Yet, in our efforts to achieve high scores and grades, we often overlook the importance of what the student actually learns in the high school classroom. In other words, how much education does the student retain in the long run? Or, how can a student achieve high grades and scores, while also preparing for academic success in college?

One of our philosophies in education is that strong foundations in English and mathematics facilitate understanding and logical reasoning of not only standardized tests (e.g., SAT, AP, etc.) but also-- and more importantly-- college curricula. Strong foundations in English and mathematics are the keys to a long-term, successful education.

As such, our program is geared toward comprehensive college preparation, and this preparation begins during the freshman year of high school. Freshmen begin by establishing foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics, all of which are essential for high school junior and senior years, as well as for college courses. Then, during the sophomore year students begin their SAT preparation, including SAT II Subject Tests and AP Tests, with the goal of completing all tests by the end of their junior year. During their junior year, students must complete all loose ends (e.g., raising test scores, volunteer activities, etc.) and begin preparation for college applications and college admissions essays.

Not every student is the same, however. Planning schedules and goals is admirable, but we must always remember that each student is a unique individual with unique goals and abilities. Thus, within the larger framework of the curriculum described within these pages, we will cater to each student’s individual needs. All of our instructors have much significant experience in academic and in college counseling, and they will be available to students and parents alike. Moreover, we will provide assistance in future educational counseling, college preparation, and extracurricular planning. Of course, timely progress reports will be completed for every student.

Again, thank you for studying with us. Together, we will help each student meet his or her educational goals. After you have perused our information pages, if you have any further questions please leave me a text message at 010 5007-7590 and I will return your call at a convenient time.

Sincerely,

Tom Choe, Head Instructor
